# Lotus

Hethel, England · est. 1952

Simplify, then add lightness.

Colin Chapman incorporated Lotus Engineering on the first day of 1952 with £25 of borrowed money and an idea that never changed: performance through absence of weight. The same Hethel nerve ran through seven Formula 1 constructors' championships and every road car the company built.

The house

## Simplify, then add lightness.

Founded 1952 Lotus Engineering Company, incorporated 1 January 1952 by Colin Chapman — building on trials specials he had made since 1948; Hethel became home in 1966. The roundel A·C·B·C The four letters woven into the badge are Chapman's initials: Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman. Formula 1 7 constructors' titles 1963, 1965, 1968, 1970, 1972, 1973 and 1978 — Clark, Hill, Rindt, Fittipaldi and Andretti took six drivers' crowns in Lotus cars. Esprit 10,675 over 28 years Giugiaro's folded-paper wedge of 1976 carried through the Peter Stevens X180 reshape to V8 power in 2004 — all on the backbone-chassis creed. Type 20 ≈118 built The 1961 Formula Junior monoposto that dominated its season — works wins for Trevor Taylor and Peter Arundell, the European title for Jo Siffert.

1. 1948

  A trials special in a lock-up

  Chapman modifies an Austin 7 into the first Lotus while studying engineering — racing improvement as a way of thinking.
2. 1952

  Lotus Engineering

  Incorporated on New Year's Day with £25 from Hazel Williams; Hornsey, then Cheshunt, then Hethel from 1966.
3. 1961

  Type 20 sweeps Formula Junior

  The reclined-driver spaceframe with Cosworth-Ford power wins across Europe — the junior rung of the ladder that carried Clark to Formula 1.
4. 1963

  First constructors' crown

  Jim Clark and the Lotus 25 monocoque take both championships; six more constructors' titles follow by 1978.
5. 1976

  The Esprit unfolds

  Giugiaro's wedge on a steel backbone brings racing-car manners to the supercar class — and Bond to the sea floor a year later.
6. 1989

  Esprit SE

  The Special Equipment car adds the chargecooled Type 910S — 264 horsepower from 2.2 litres, the fastest four-cylinder of its day.
