The execution

Roughly eight development cars. Chassis 73015 was the launch prototype shown at the 21 July 1987 Maranello press conference — the most-photographed F40 of all.

The development cars carried the eleven-month programme from the 288 GTO Evoluzione to the reveal. 74045, the third car built, stayed with the works, became an LM and finished 12th overall at Le Mans in 1995 — the best result any F40 ever took there.

On the record

- 73015 fronted the reveal — the most-photographed F40
- 74045 raced Le Mans twice as a works LM
- Eleven months from brief to finished car
