The execution

The most powerful sports-racer ever campaigned — 1’100 PS in race trim from 5.4 litres and two turbos. Donohue won the last six rounds of 1973; the series never recovered.

Six chassis, only two complete Penske race cars. A 2,500 mm wheelbase, over 200 litres of fuel, the first Porsche intercoolers — and on the works bench, towards 1’500 PS. A fuel-consumption rule ended it for 1974; Donohue’s 1975 Talladega record was the farewell. At auction the turbos awe more than they trade.

On the record

- Talladega closed-course record 1975: 355.8 km/h
- $4.4M in 2012 → $3.0M in 2016 for the same car (004)
