A V12 for the long way home

A restrained Pininfarina coupé with room for four, a front-mounted V12 and a choice of manual or automatic transmission. The 400 introduced this chapter in 1976; fuel injection brought the 400i, and the enlarged-engined 412 carried it through to 1989.

Overview

A V12 for the long way home

The 400 arrived at the 1976 Paris Motor Show, developing the four-seat Pininfarina body first used by the 365 GT4 2+2. Its larger V12 and optional automatic gearbox addressed the requirements of an everyday grand tourer.

Fuel injection arrived with the 400i in 1979. The outline remained recognisable, but mechanical specifications evolved during production. Original documents and build details are more reliable guides than a badge or registration year alone.

The 412 followed in 1985 with an enlarged engine and further revisions, remaining in production until 1989. This family page keeps all three chapters together while preserving their transmission choices and model identities.
